Figure commits $3.5B to compute; Medtronic puts $700M into Cornerstone

Corrected 14 Sep 2026Corrected on 11 September 2026. Five items came out: the FDA's authorisation of the Aletta blood-draw robot and Wired's report on Meta's data-centre robots, both published before this issue's week; a generative interface model that is off our beat; a second write-up of EPFL's sound-powered fliers, which issue 4 carried; and an item that no longer clears our revised ranking. Five items from the same week came in. The preheader no longer calls a simulated prompt-injection attack on a robot dog an attack on a deployed policy. Later that day, four Quick Links from the same week came in: Robot.com's delivery deal with Sodexo, Berg Insight's humanoid forecast and two papers. On 14 September our weeks moved from Saturday–Friday to Monday–Sunday, so this issue now covers 31 August – 6 September: three items from 29 – 30 August came out — Blind Dexterity, N0-Foundation and the piece on Chinese automakers building robots — because their week is issue 4's, which is full; from 5 September, Sabac's first humanoid shipments, the cyborg roaches and ICE's plans for robot dogs moved in from issue 6, and an origami-inspired folding actuator came in.

GPT-6 Astra on robot arms (4 minute read)

A follow-up to an earlier test of Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 gives OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra control of the same YAM arms under the same agent policy. Astra placed a block in a bowl in 19 of 20 trials, against 8 for Fable 5.1 and 1 for Fable 5, in 2.5 minutes a trial and at about $0.94 a run. On a puzzle-piece insertion it matched Fable 5.1's 2 successes in 20, stalling at the same final step.

Sabac Robot Factory Ships First Humanoid Units (2 minute read)

A plant in Šabac shipped its first humanoid units on 4 September 2026, with a planned capacity of three thousand robots a year. Serbia's first factory of its kind is a joint venture between Chinese automotive parts maker Minth and robot maker Agibot, building two humanoid models and a quadruped. Serbia is the base Minth wants for the European market rather than another car-industry plant, and the robots go first to industry and later to households.

One Print, Many Moves: a monolithic origami-inspired folding actuator (paper · 15 minute read)

MONORIGAMI programmes stiffness anisotropy into the material itself, using thickness tiers patterned in an origami geometry so a soft actuator folds accurately along the intended crease and resists deformation elsewhere. The whole actuator prints in a single material in one pass, with no assembly and no added reinforcement. Each actuator is a scalable motion primitive, and linking and orienting several of them mechanically programs multi-degree-of-freedom trajectories, demonstrated on three printed systems built from the same module.

Cyborg Roaches Can Stab You With Needles (4 minute read)

The University of Queensland's Biorobotics Lab has built 'Paraborgs', cockroaches carrying electronics and a spring-loaded needle, to reach people trapped under rubble. Lab director T. Thang Vo-Doan calls cyborg insects a shortcut around some of the hardest problems in robotics: an insect-sized machine that moves through rubble, recovers from falls and carries its own power. An insect already has that mobility, so the lab adds electronics to a live one.

Show HN: Sleeper Agents in Robot Dogs and Kinetic Prompt Injections (1 minute read)

A researcher shows that a compromised screen displaying a fake system update can make Gemini Robotics 2.0 save a sleeper-agent skill that fires later when it sees a trigger object. In a MuJoCo simulation the robot dog was manipulated into attacking a child, through the same prompt-injection weakness language models have. The attack runs in three steps: the fake update plants the skill, a pineapple in view activates it, and the dog then acts on the hidden instructions.

Atlas: A World Model for Spatial Intelligence (10 minute read)

World Labs has introduced Atlas, a multimodal autoregressive diffusion transformer pretrained from scratch on text, images, video and 3D. All inputs share one spatial context, from which the model generates what comes next while staying consistent in 3D with everything it has already seen. It covers world generation, reconstruction and simulation, including camera-controlled generation from one or more images, and World Labs says performance keeps improving as training compute grows.

SmoothRL: Efficient Online RL with Asynchronous Execution (video · 3 min)

Astribot's SmoothRL runs online reinforcement learning while the robot keeps moving, learning from the actions actually executed in the world. The company reports dynamic tossing rising from 39% to 94%, pen capping from 8% to 83% and box opening from 30% to 90%. Astribot calls it the first reinforcement learning validated on real-world, high-dynamic tossing, and has published uncut footage alongside a technical report.

AGIBOT Releases AGIBOT WORLD 2026 Theme 3 for Real-World Robot Reinforcement Learning (4 minute read)

AGIBOT has open-sourced 11,430 real-world trajectories across 14 industrial and household tasks, including 1,024 successful and 1,369 failed policy rollouts. Annotations cover task progress, completion, errors, disturbances and human interventions, giving structured execution feedback rather than demonstrations alone. It is the reinforcement-learning theme of AGIBOT WORLD 2026, an open-source dataset initiative organised into themes, and the data spans expert demonstrations, autonomous deployment and human-in-the-loop correction.

Show HN: I kept finding robot datasets with skewed clocks, so I built a checker (tool · 9 minute read)

embodied-sync is an open-source Python library for aligning and validating multi-sensor robot datasets, handling different sample rates, clock skew and drift, late packets and missing frames. It fits around UMI, LeRobot, ROS 2 and MCAP, and the author describes the project as alpha. The pitch is that cameras run at one rate and robot state at another, packets arrive late, and a device reconnect can silently reset its clock, so a policy trains on observations that never lined up.

Hebbian Robotics open-sources HFlow, an SDK for robot data pipelines (tool · 7 minute read)

Hebbian Robotics, part of Y Combinator's summer 2026 batch, has open-sourced HFlow, an SDK for multimodal data pipelines in robotics. It checks recordings for frozen cameras, drifting streams, missing topics and duplicates, runs transformations and labels, and stamps each processed episode with its provenance in a queryable catalogue, with MCAP as its input and output format.

Figure and Nscale sign for up to 100,000 GPUs on NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform (1 minute read)

Figure is committing $3.5 billion, with intent to scale past $6 billion, to deploy up to 100,000 GPUs on NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform from the second half of 2027 in Barstow, Texas. Nscale is also investing in Figure, which says it is now bound by the data and compute needed to train Helix. It follows Index, Figure's effort to assemble the most diverse humanoid training dataset yet, which the company says is generating 35 minutes of data every second.

NVIDIA Is Buying Hugging Face. One of Its Hottest Robots Runs on a Chinese Chip (4 minute read)

NVIDIA's proposed $12.9 billion acquisition of Hugging Face is being framed as a software deal, but Hugging Face also owns Pollen Robotics. Its new $399 Microduck, which passed 10,000 orders, runs on Rockchip's RK3566 rather than an NVIDIA processor. Pollen, the French company Hugging Face bought in 2025, lists the RK3566 and its AI accelerator among Microduck's key specifications, and the backlog has pushed some deliveries past the original Christmas target.

Medtronic invests $700M in surgical partner Cornerstone Robotics (2 minute read)

Medtronic is investing $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics and has taken rights to distribute its Sentire surgical system in selected markets outside the US. Sentire will be sold alongside Medtronic's own Hugo robotic-assisted surgery platform. Surgical head Matt Anderson said Medtronic is deliberately investing across several robotic platforms because surgeons, health systems and markets have different needs.

Lyte raises $165M to help robots better sense their surroundings (2 minute read)

Lyte AI raised $165 million in Series C at a $1.6 billion post-money valuation, for processors, multimodal sensors and software it says it owns from the transistor up. Chief executive Alexander Shpunt argues that physical AI has a sensing problem before it has a model problem. Lyte is in production and shipping to inspection, logistics and manufacturing customers, and will use the round to put LyteVision into more robots and more environments.
